"While much has been written about the interrelationships between tourism and the sex trade, African destinations have been neglected in sex tourism research. With the restrictions being developed in Southeast and East Asia and the lack of controls in African countries, the continent has become a favourite destination for sex tourists. However, little work has been done to examine this phenomenon in the African context. One of the key reasons for this lack of interest in research in this area is the absence of hard data coupled with the fact that sexual taboos still affect attitudes to the sex trade in Africa. Illustrated by in-depth empirical research from Kenya - one of the most popular country destinations in Africa for sex tourism - this book gathers much-needed statistics and data, and then critically examines the features of tourism and the sex trade, contextualizing this in relation to tourism development. It addresses the conditions which generate this social phenomenon and, while not taking a moralistic stance which it considers to be counter-productive, it questions whether this trade is exploitative in nature, particularly in cases of child sex tourism. It concludes by arguing that current policies based on knee-jerk, anti-sex trade reaction in an attempt to regulate the sex tourism industry need to be re-evaluated and re-focused." -- Book cover.
